Amstelbay

Timeline

Every age its change.

First the film full screen, then one age per slide.
Scroll through time

For four hundred years the way we work kept changing. And each time it helped to have someone who had done it before. From the Amstel and the IJ to today.

In every age two people stand together. In orange the one who wants to change, in blue someone who did it before.

Around 1600

The Amstel and the IJ

This is where our name comes from.

Trade by sea asked for a skipper who had sailed the route before.

The Amstel and the IJ around 1600: warehouses along the water and sailing ships at anchor. On the quay someone in blue shows the way to someone in orange.

Around 1900

The factory

Work moved onto the line, in fixed steps.

Whoever set up a factory brought in someone who had made such a line run before.

A factory hall around 1900 with a long production line and belt driven machines. In front someone in blue explains to someone in orange how the line runs.

The sixties

Punch card and computer room

The books moved to the computer room, on punch cards.

Whoever started second learned from whoever went first.

A computer room in the sixties with tape drives, a punch card machine, a tray of punch cards and a paper tape. Two people stand between the cabinets.

The eighties

A PC on every desk

The computer came to the desk and every department worked differently.

Whoever had seen it succeed elsewhere showed the way.

An office in the eighties with a PC on a wooden desk, floppy disks and a printer with fanfold paper. Two people look out over the department.

The late nineties

The internet

Companies went online and customers began to order for themselves.

Anyone who had linked a web shop to an ERP before was worth gold.

A long row of desks with tube monitors in the late nineties, a modem and cables across the floor, the canal outside. Two people stand at the first desk.

The 2010s

Mobile and the cloud

The system moved to the cloud, and work into everyone's pocket.

Moving over asked for people who had made that move before.

A bright office in the 2010s with laptops on long tables. Someone in orange holds a phone, someone in blue points at the clouds above the canal houses, and a server rack is wheeled away.

Around 2018

Working in short rounds

Big plans became rounds of two weeks, with team and management at one table.

It works when someone there already knows the rhythm.

A team at a long table with laptops, in front of a wall of cards in columns. Someone in blue moves a card, someone in orange looks on.

Today

Software that thinks along

Now the software learns along with us.

The question is the same as in 1600: who has done this before, in a company like yours?

Two people at a desk in a canal house, seen from behind, facing a screen with a calm glow. Outside lies the canal with trees in autumn colours.

And now you

We know the people who did this before.

Whatever change lies ahead of you, someone has made it succeed before. We know who.
